We have some of the most amazing Giant Double Red Poppies at the farm. This past fall, we collected enough seed to share! These blooms are MONSTERS and almost look like red peonies. Keep a good eye on them. One day you will see a green pod pulling itself up and BOOM....within hours, the poppy blooms and reveals all its glorious beauty. You can just let it stay in the garden until the pods are dried and cracked open, and then carefully empty the seeds into a paper bag for sowing next year! This beauty just keeps on giving. The dried pods do double duty as a wonderful dried flower in your home, so use this wonderful plant to decorate year round.

Our Giant Double Red Poppy seeds are measured in 3gram packages - that is a full teaspoon (poppy seeds are SMALL). I can only guess that there are close to a thousand seeds to sprinkle in your garden!

How to Plant:

Poppies are best when sown in the winter, we find. Just sprinkle them over top of the snow where you'd like to see them grow in your garden, and then wait for a flashy show that will come most of the summer. You can save the seed and also sow in the fall, before winter comes.

One method that many home gardeners use with their poppies is the milk-jug method which creates a mini greenhouse for winter sowing. Poppies do not generally like to be transplanted as they have a very deep taproot, so be sure to pick your location!

Milk Jug Method:

Cut a milk jug, add a few stones in the bottom for drainage and poke a few holes so water doesn't pool at the root. Fill with potting soil, then sprinkle your poppy seeds on top. I like to put a thin 1/8" layer of vermiculite on just about everything I start. Water well. Take the top of the milk jug that you cut off, tape it back together and place the jug outside (top off) in a sunny spot. The jug will act as a greenhouse, and is a protected, self-watering mini little thing. Transplant the poppies in the spring when the ground is workable and watch them grow!

Of course, if you're not into the work, sprinkle the seeds now, or in the very early spring when the snow is still on the ground - they'll root and put on a beautiful show.

Self Sowing

We find poppies will sometimes literally POP up in unexpected places in our garden year over year. Animals, birds, the wind and bees can sometimes spread them about, so don't be surprised if this happens. It's a wonderful miracle to see them show up when you least expect it!
